Linux Assembly Language Programming
Master x86 assembly language from the Linux point of view! Assembly language lies at the boundary between hardware and software. While it can be described purely in terms of how it controls hardware, many of its features only make sense in the context of operating systems and programming languages.
In Linux Assembly Language Programming, Bob Neveln explains all the key features of x86 assembly language in the context of the Linux operating system and the C language. The book’s step-by-step, one-concept-at-a-time coverage is designed to help experienced hardware programmers move to Linux, and learn how to create Linux device drivers. As developers learn new x86 assembly language skills, they also gain “under the hood” insight into how Linux works — and into the way processor and software design impact each other. For C programmers who want to understand more about the interactions between Linux and hardware; and for assembler programmers who want to apply their skills in the Linux environment.

Linux Security Cookbook
Book Description:
The Linux Security Cookbook includes real solutions to a wide range of targeted problems, such as sending encrypted email within Emacs, restricting access to network services at particular times of day, firewalling a webserver, preventing IP spoofing, setting up key-based SSH authentication, and much more. With over 150 ready-to-use scripts and configuration files, this unique book helps administrators secure their systems without having to look up specific syntax.
Computer security is an ongoing process, a relentless contest between system administrators and intruders. A good administrator needs to stay one step ahead of any adversaries, which often involves a continuing process of education. If you're grounded in the basics of security, however, you won't necessarily want a complete treatise on the subject each time you pick up a book. Sometimes you want to get straight to the point. That's exactly what the new Linux Security Cookbook does. Rather than provide a total security solution for Linux computers, the authors present a series of easy-to-follow recipes--short, focused pieces of code that administrators can use to improve security and perform common tasks securely. The book begins with recipes devised to establish a secure system, then moves on to secure day-to-day practices, and concludes with techniques to help your system stay secure. Some of the "recipes" you'll find in this book are:
* Controlling access to your system from firewalls down to individual services, using iptables, ipchains, xinetd, inetd, and more
* Monitoring your network with tcpdump, dsniff, netstat, and other tools
* Protecting network connections with Secure Shell (SSH) and stunnel
* Safeguarding email sessions with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
* Encrypting files and email messages with GnuPG
* Probing your own security with password crackers, nmap, and handy scripts
This cookbook's proven techniques are derived from hard-won experience. Whether you're responsible for security on a home Linux system or for a large corporation, or somewhere in between, you'll find valuable, to-the-point, practical recipes for dealing with everyday security issues. This book is a system saver.

Managing & Using MySQL (Second Edition)
Book Description:
Learn how to use MySQL, a popular database product that supports key subsets of SQL on Linux and Unix systems. Using C/C++, Java, Perl, PHP, or Python, you can write programs to interact with a MySQL database, either as a stand-alone application or through a web page. This book covers the whole process, from installation to programming interfaces and database administration. It includes ample tutorial material and examples.
MySQL is a popular and robust open source database product that supports key subsets of SQL on both Linux and Unix systems. MySQL is free for nonprofit use and costs a small amount for commercial use. Unlike commercial databases, MySQL is affordable and easy to use. This book includes introductions to SQL and to relational database theory. If you plan to use MySQL to build web sites or other Linux or Unix applications, this book teaches you to do that, and it will remain useful as a reference once you understand the basics. Ample tutorial material and examples are included throughout.
This book has all you need to take full advantage of this powerful database management system. It takes you through the whole process from installation and configuration to programming interfaces and database administration. This second edition has a greatly enhanced administration chapter that includes information on administrative tools, server configuration, server startup and shutdown, log file management, database backup and restore, and database administration and repair. In addition, a new chapter on security describes data, server, and client-server security, while a chapter on extending MySQL provides an overview of MySQL internals and describes the use of MySQL user-defined functions.
If you know C/C++, Java, Perl, PHP, or Python, you can write programs to interact with your MySQL database. In addition, you can embed queries and updates directly in an HTML file so that a web page becomes its own interface to the database. Managing and Using MySQL includes chapters on the programming language interfaces, and it also includes a complete reference section with specific function calls for each language.
Also included in the reference section are references to the SQL language, and details of the MySQL system variables, programs, and utilities. New to the second edition is a reference to the internal MySQL tables, which will be of particular interest to those who want to work extensively with MySQL security.

Webster's New World Hacker Dictionary
Knowledge is Power. With This Dictionary, You're better equipped to be a White Hat and Guard against Cybercrime
The comprehensive Hacker Dictionary for Security Professionals, Businesses, Governments, legal professionals, and others dealing with cyberspace.
Hackers. Crackers. Phreakers. Black hats. White hats. Cybercrime. Logfiles. Anonymous Digital Cash. ARP Redirect.
Cyberspace has a language all its own. Understanding it is vital if you're concerned about Internet security, national security, or even personal security. As recent events have proven, you don't have to own a computer to be the victim of cybercrime-crackers have accessed information in the records of large, respected organizations, institutions, and even the military.
This is your guide to understanding hacker terminology. It's up to date and comprehensive, with:
* Clear, concise, and accurate definitions of more than 875 hacker terms
* Entries spanning key information-technology security concepts, organizations, case studies, laws, theories, and tools
* Entries covering general terms, legal terms, legal cases, and people
* Suggested further reading for definitions
This unique book provides a chronology of hacker-related developments beginning with the advent of the computer and continuing through current events in what is identified as today's Fear of a Cyber-Apocalypse Era. An appendix entitled "How Do Hackers Break into Computers?" details some of the ways crackers access and steal information.
This book attempts to take a novel approach to the presentation and understanding of a controversial topic in modern-day society: hacking versus cracking.
The perception of this bi-modal activity is as controversial as the process itself—with many in society confusing the positive attributes of hackers with the criminal activities of crackers.
This dictionary tries to balance the two sides of the equation: the White Hat or the positive side of hacking with the Black Hat or the negative side of cracking.
This dictionary is written for general readers, students who want to learn about hackers and crackers, and business leaders who want to become more knowledgeable about the IT security field to keep their enterprises financially stable and to be proactive against intrusive cyber-attackers.
For those wanting to learn beyond our entries (which have been grouped into general terms, legal terms, legal cases, and person), we have provided further readings under each entry and at the end of the dictionary.
The entries have been compiled by two experts in the field of information technology security and hacker profiling.
Hundreds of entries have been included to provide explanations and descriptions of key information technology security concepts, organizations, case studies, laws, theories, and tools.
These entries describe hacktivist, creative hacker, and criminal cracker activities associated with a wide range of cyber exploits.

Microsoft AJAX Library Essentials
Microsoft AJAX Library Essentials is a practical reference for the client-side library of the ASP.NET AJAX Framework 1.0, and a tutorial for the underlying technologies and techniques required to use the library at its full potential. The main goal of this book is to get you comfortable with the Microsoft AJAX Library, a huge set of functions that can be used for developing powerful client-side functionality.
Beginning with a hands-on tour of the basic technologies associated with AJAX, JavaScript, XMLHttpRequest, JSON, and the DOM, you'll move on to a crash course in the Microsoft AJAX tools. You will learn, through numerous step-by-step exercises, how to create basic AJAX applications, how the object-based programming model of JavaScript works, and how Microsoft AJAX Library extends this model. You'll understand the architecture of the Microsoft AJAX components, how they all fit together, and exactly what they can do for you. Then you will learn how to use the Microsoft AJAX Library in your web projects, and a detailed case study will walk you through creating your own customized client components.
At every stage of your journey, you'll be able to try out examples to illuminate the theory, and consolidate your understanding. In addition to learning about the client and server controls, you'll also see how to handle errors and debug your AJAX applications.

Network Security with OpenSSL
Book Description:
Most applications these days are at least somewhat network aware, but how do you protect those applications against common network security threats? Many developers are turning to OpenSSL, an open source version of SSL/TLS, which is the most widely used protocol for secure network communications. The OpenSSL library is seeing widespread adoption for web sites that require cryptographic functions to protect a broad range of sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and other financial transactions. The library is the only free, full-featured SSL implementation for C and C++, and it can be used programmatically or from the command line to secure most TCP-based network protocols.
Network Security with OpenSSL enables developers to use this protocol much more effectively. Traditionally, getting something simple done in OpenSSL could easily take weeks. This concise book gives you the guidance you need to avoid pitfalls, while allowing you to take advantage of the library?s advanced features. And, instead of bogging you down in the technical details of how SSL works under the hood, this book provides only the information that is necessary to use OpenSSL safely and effectively. In step-by-step fashion, the book details the challenges in securing network communications, and shows you how to use OpenSSL tools to best meet those challenges. As a system or network administrator, you will benefit from the thorough treatment of the OpenSSL command-line interface, as well as from step-by-step directions for obtaining certificates and setting up your own certification authority. As a developer, you will further benefit from the in-depth discussions and examples of how to use OpenSSL in your own programs. Although OpenSSL is written in C, information on how to use OpenSSL with Perl, Python and PHP is also included. OpenSSL may well answer your need to protect sensitive data. If that?s the case, Network Security with OpenSSL is the only guide available on the subject.

Ultra-Wideband Wireless Communications and Networks
Ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission has recently received great attention in both academia and industry for applications in wireless communications. It was among the CNN’s top 10 technologies to watch in 2004. A UWB system is defined as any radio system that has a 10-dB bandwidth larger than 20% of its center frequency, or has a 10-dB bandwidth equal to or larger than 500 MHz. The recent approval of UWB technology by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States reserves the unlicensed frequency band between 3.1 and 10.6 GHz (7.5 GHz) for indoor UWB wireless communication systems.
It is expected that many conventional principles and approaches used for short-range wireless communications will be reevaluated and a new industrial sector in short-range (e.g., 10 m) wireless communications with high data rate (e.g., 400 Mbps) will be formed. Further, industrial standards IEEE 802.15.3a (high data rate) and IEEE 802.15.4a (very low data rate) based on UWB technology have been introduced.

Pro PHP Security
The Internet is a dangerous place for applications. In fact, it is reasonable to say that you
couldn’t create a less secure system if you tried. It is anonymous, uncontrolled, always on,
and instantly accessible from anywhere. This is a world where every bad actor, cracker, script, kiddie, and scam artist is your neighbor, and it is stupendously difficult to deny them access to your front door.

Hack Proofing Your Wireless Network
Wireless technology is a new and rapidly growing field of concentration for network engineers and administrators. Innovative technology is now making the communication between computers a cordless affair. Wireless devices and networks are vulnerable to additional security risks because of their presence in the mobile environment.
The simple way to make a wireless system or device more secure is to put it into a faraday cage. Unfortunately, while this strategy leaves you with a device that is unreachable by attackers, it also leaves you with a device that is practically useless.
Traditionally, someone had to be sitting in front of your computer to read your documents, see your e-mail, and mess with your settings. Today, however, someone can be sitting in the office next door, a few floors up or down, or even in the next building, and have the same abilities as if he were in front of your computer. Advancements in wireless communications have allowed for great increases in productivity and ease of use, but have brought with them many additional risks to the systems and information being used.

Practical Linux
Practical Linux gears itself toward people who don't want to be burdened with technobabble, but just want to use Linux just as they would any other operating system. Most books in this category concentrate mostly on the installation and configuration process, while neglecting content that helps you use Linux for daily tasks. This book covers all the bases, making use of a systematic approach, while providing numerous cross-references. Topics include working with the KDE and Gnome desktops, using the command line, getting help and maintaining your system, connecting to the Web, using browsers, setting up e-mail, setting up printers and adding peripherals, using graphics and multimedia tools, and networking.

Grid Networks Enabling Grids with Advanced Communication Technology
The term “Grid” designates a fundamentally new architecture that provides powerful capabilities for creating advanced information technology services. The Grid was designed to provide services that cannot be supported with traditional architecture. Grid architecture allows resources to be gathered and customized to support an almost unlimited number of services, which can be individualized to meet precise requirements. Grid architecture has been designed to incorporate virtually any type of resource into a common, shared environment.
The Grid provides scalable, reliable, secure mechanisms for discovering, assembling, integrating, utilizing, reconfiguring, and releasing multiple heterogeneous resources. These resources can include compute clusters, specialized computers, software, mass storage, data repositories, instruments, and sensors. However, Grid environments are not restricted to incorporating common information technology resources. The architecture is highly expandable and can extend to virtually any type of device with a communications capability

Programming C# 2nd
Book Description:
The first part of Programming C#, 2nd Edition introduces C# fundamentals, then goes on to explain the development of desktop and Internet applications, including Windows Forms, ADO.NET, ASP.NET (including Web Forms), and Web Services. Next, this book gets to the heart of the .NET Framework, focusing on attributes and reflection, remoting, threads and synchronization, streams, and finally, it illustrates how to interoperate with COM objects.
C# was designed from the ground up for development on Microsoft's .NET framework. As such, it's a high-performance language that's simple, safe, object-oriented, and Internet-centric. Programming C#, 2nd Edition teaches this new language in a way that experienced programmers will appreciate--by grounding its applications firmly in the context of Microsoft's .NET platform and the development of desktop and Internet applications. The first part of this book introduces C# fundamentals, then goes on to explain:
Classes and objects
Inheritance and polymorphism
Operator overloading
Structs and interfaces
Arrays, indexers, and collections
String objects and regular expressions
Exceptions and bug handling
Delegates and events
Part two of Programming C#, 2nd Edition focuses on development of desktop and Internet applications, including Windows Forms, ADO.NET and ASP.NET. ASP.NET includes Web Forms, for rapid development of web applications, and Web Services for creating objects without user interfaces, to provide services over the Internet. Part three gets to the heart of the .NET Framework, focusing on attributes and reflection, remoting, threads and cynchronization, and streams. Part three also illustrates how to interoperate with COM objects. In much the way that you can see the features and personality of the parents and grandparents in young children, you can easily see the influence of Java, C++, Visual Basic, and other languages in C#. The level of information in Programming C#, 2nd Edition allows you to become productive quickly with C# and to rely on it as a powerful addition to your family of mastered programming languages.

Programming Web Services with SOAP
Book Description:
Programming Web Services with SOAP introduces you to building distributed Web-based applications using the SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI protocols. You’ll learn the XML underlying these standards, as well as how to use the popular toolkits for Java and Perl. The book also addresses security and other enterprise issues.
The web services architecture provides a new way to think about and implement application-to-application integration and interoperability that makes the development platform irrelevant. Two applications, regardless of operating system, programming language, or any other technical implementation detail, communicate using XML messages over open Internet protocols such as HTTP or SMTP. The Simple Open Access Protocol (SOAP) is a specification that details how to encode that information and has become the messaging protocol of choice for Web services. Programming Web Services with SOAP is a detailed guide to using SOAP and other leading web services standards–WSDL (Web Service Description Language), and UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration protocol). You’ll learn the concepts of the web services architecture and get practical advice on building and deploying web services in the enterprise. This authoritative book decodes the standards, explaining the concepts and implementation in a clear, concise style. You’ll also learn about the major toolkits for building and deploying web services. Examples in Java, Perl, C#, and Visual Basic illustrate the principles. Significant applications developed using Java and Perl on the Apache Tomcat web platform address real issues such as security, debugging, and interoperability. Covered topic areas include:
The Web Services Architecture
SOAP envelopes, headers, and encodings
WSDL and UDDI
Writing web services with Apache SOAP and Java
Writing web services with Perl’s SOAP::Lite
Peer-to-peer (P2P) web services
Enterprise issues such as authentication, security, and identity
Up-and-coming standards projects for web services
Programming Web Services with SOAP provides you with all the information on the standards, protocols, and toolkits you’ll need to integrate information services with SOAP. You’ll find a solid core of information that will help you develop individual Web services or discover new ways to integrate core business processes across an enterprise.
